No, it's not real. It came on a wine ad in a magazine. I wouldn't really get a dragon. This is just practice. It's only the second time I've worn a temporary, but I'm seriously considering getting a real one, possibly for my birthday.
This is the location I'm contemplating, for two reasons: Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls has one there and I've always thought it looked great, tough, cool (honest! she rocks!); and if I'm gonna go through pain, I want to be able to see the fruits of it anytime I wish.
I'm hyperconscious about it looking good; I am considering my age, weight, etc., in relation to the potential location.
POM smirked at me today and said I look like a truckdriver. Thoughts?

I think location depends in part on what you'd get--if not a dragon, then what? It's probably kind of a bold place to get your first tattoo, not really easy to cover up in some settings. But I don't mean that to dissuade at all. It's a good spot, just so long as you feel comfortable with it. The big question is what you'd put there.
I like it as a place to get a tatoo, okay, for YOU to get one, not me -
I never thought about having or wanting to cover it up - but Scrivener seems to have a point.
So what would you want?
Do you know yet?
I saw a beautifully detailed large dragonfly on a woman's bicep and was so taken with it that I asked if I could photograph it.
She said yes, and now I have a slightly blurry picture.
i think i have it narrowed to two choices. (perhaps one for each arm? in the future, that is!)
i really like the drawings of aslan from chronicles of narnia, the early drawings by pauline baynes. i've considered a lion for many different reasons -- i've been reading the narnia books since i was a wee young thing, and the images are etched into my brain (i'm a very visual person, especially when it comes to book illustrations); i am a leo (not that i keep up much with such things, but it adds to the list of whys); and i have a lot of religious connections to the lion figure and especially to aslan and all that he symbolizes.
the other option would be something to do with a tree and a cross, and probably celtic in flavor.
i already know who i want to have do it. (http://www.luckyfish.com/) i've been nosing around her web site for years now, and even made contact for an appointment once, which got canceled because the friend who was going to do it with me bailed. there will be no bailing this time.
i want it visible, not for the tough factor, but because i am an out-of-sight-out-of-mind kind of person, and i need frequent reminders. having a visual reminder of my faith and where i've been in my life would be a good thing.
by the way, scriv, i've oft admired your flaming typewriter tattoo! it's not only gorgeous, but it's a powerful symbol, too.
Leo!
I love the idea of a lion for all the reasons you listed. Plus they are so strong, and beautiful, and kingly.
I like the location too; particularly if you don't need or want to cover it up all the time.
I think the lion sounds really cool. My thinking with my tattoo was that I wanted an image that both had some specific meaning for me and was an overdetermined enough image that I would be able to continue to reinterpret it over time. Thanks for your comment about mine. I remain very happy with it. It sounds a little dumb to write it, but as I've been going through all this upheaval in the last 6 months, I have on a fairly regular basis looked at my tattoo and thought about the message it bears: that I can change my patterns and rise from the ashes, and that I can appreciate myself and take pride in myself as a writer.
I did not even know how much of a rite of passage it was at the moment that I got it, but that is absolutely what it was. I enjoyed the entire process too. It hurt, but not too much.
