I like #1 and #5. in the first you can see lots of detail- all the nuance. (The word I have to type below is tvqruqal, I think. That's a super wierd one!)
Between #1-3, I definitely like #1 the best, because of the brighter background and really soft bokeh. But then I think I prefer #4 to #1 because the flower takes up more of the frame but keeps the bright, soft background. I'm not sure between #4 & #5. I do like the pattern in the last one--it's very slightly more abstracted, less straight flowerish--but if you're going for flowerishness, then I would go with #4.
#5 was the one i actually took first. i love the light and tone of it, but i'm not actually happy with the wacky focus; i'm not sure there's more than one square millimeter that actually *is* in focus.
in this quest, my mind was mostly concentrated on the light and tone versus framing. for that reason, i'm inclined to #4, because i liked the non-flash (no glare) and the light of the sun reflecting off the white fence in the background (but i didn't want any detail of the background).
sounds as though we're all agreed that the flash shots don't do anything for us. of the first three, #1 had no flash.
i'm not sure i was going for flowerishness. i only had eyes for the quality of the light, which is why i took so many damned shots of the same thing -- i kept not getting what i wanted, despite trying different strategies and settings.
thanks, y'all, for your feedback. it helps to know how and what others see. my own brain is a very small room sometimes.

I particularly like the last one.
4 and 5, the soft focus in the background just work for me!

I'm going to say the first one. I like the darker background with bokeh. It's a lovely flower that you've captured.
