my macro lens, as you have probably figured out, is one of my favourite things, so I am not a good choice for counsel on NOT to get one - although I have seen stunning work on flickr from people who do macro photography w/o the expensive lens http://www.flickr.com/groups/poor_mans_macro/
and that has caught my interest and excitement lately - especially after I dropped my 100mm and wasn't sure if it would recover!!!!

BTW really like the snails and the light and the trail
